2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

May cause slight irritation of gastrointestinal tract.

Eye

May cause moderate irritation.

Skin

May cause an allergic skin reaction in sensitive individuals.

Inhaled

May cause slight irritation of mucous membranes.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Long or frequent overexposures may lead to skin sensitisation. Some cases of contact dermatitis have been reported. No other adverse effects recorded. Not listed as carcinogenic or mutagenic in any jurisdiction.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Treat for shock if required. Give water to drink. Unless recovery is prompt seek medical advice.

Eye

Hold eyelids open and flush with water for 15 minutes. If symptoms persist seek medical advice.

Skin

Remove contaminated clothing. Wash affected area for 5 minutes with soap and water. Do not rub hard. Rinse well and pat dry. If symptoms persist seek medical advice.

Inhaled

Remove patient to fresh air. Loosen tight clothing and allow to rest. Treat for shock if required. Rinse mouth and nose with water. Provide artificial respiration if breathing stops. Unless recovery is prompt seek medical advice.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

No specific antidotes available. Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 3800 mg/kg (Rat) Dermal LD50 = >7940 mg/kg (Rabbit) Inhalation LC50 = not available On the basis of available information this material is not expected to have any detrimental effects if the recommended safety precautions are followed. Sensitisation : Maximisation Test (guinea pig) : Sensitising (skin) Patch testing (human experience) : not sensitising, non-irritant Genotoxicity : not mutagenic (in vitro, in vivo) Other toxicological inforamtion : not teratogenic. Oral carcinogenicity test (rat, mouse) : tumours not relevant in man.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

Worksafe has not established an exposure standard for this substance. It is recommended that it be treated as producing 'nuisance dusts' and that an exposure standard of 10 mg/m3 measured as respirable dust and 5 mg/m3 measured as inspirable dust be adopted.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Provide suitable ventilation to ensure that workplace ambient air is kept below the exposure standard recommended. Avoid the creation of high dust concentrations by the use of dust extractors. Dust forms an explosive mixture with air at 203 g/m3.

3.3 Personal Protection

Avoid breathing dusts. If work is to be carried out in a poorly ventilated or confined area use suitable respirators. See AS1716 for details. Goggles or chemical safety glasses should be worn. Wearers of contact lenses are advised to be particularly careful. Gloves are not normally required but if handling product for long periods they may prove beneficial. Wear cotton overalls fastened at the neck and wrists. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking and using toilet facilities.

3.4 Flammability

Substance decomposes above 290 deg C emitting toxic fumes of SOx. May ignite at temperatures above 100 deg C. May form explosive dust clouds.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Store in a cool area away from oxidisers, acids or foodstuffs. Keep containers tightly closed when not in use. Avoid creating dust cloud when cleaning store area. Containers retain vapours and product residues. Follow labelled instructions as if container were full. Transport in accordance with the ADG Code. Do not transport with Class 5 DG or strong acids.

Hazard IRRITANT

Risk Phrases

R43 May cause sensitisation by skin contact.

R50/53 Very toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.

Safety Phrases

S22 Do not breathe dust.

S24 Avoid contact with skin.

S37 Wear suitable gloves.

S60 This material and its container must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

S61 Avoid release to the environment; refer to special instructions or Material Safety Data Sheet.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Prevent material entering drains or waterways. Avoid creating dust clouds. Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including breathing protection for dusty environments.

Sweep, shovel up and place in clean, dry containers, label and place in a safe place to await disposal. Flush spill area with water. Absorb water with sand or vermiculite, shovel into container, label and place in a safe area to await disposal as contaminated water.

Disposal

Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Emits toxic fumes of SOx, NOx and COx when decomposing or in contact with strong oxidisers or acids. May pose a dust explosion hazard at high concentrations. May ignite at temperatures greater than 100 deg C.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including selfc-contained breathing apparatus. Use water spray, water mist, foam, dry chemical powder or carbon dioxide type extinguishers. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. Do not allow run-off from fire-fighting to enter drains or water courses.
